”I Noticed That She Didn’t Smile”
Tuesday Jul 05, 2022
Tuesday Jul 05, 2022
As we continue our summer series on communication, I took a moment to talk with my mom, Jean, about this neurodiverse family of ours. Her perspective and her observations about discovering autism in our family is going to be so relatable to so many of you. As a retired teacher (and she was held in high regard in our community), she thinks back to students she had who she now realizes were neurodiverse - and how she didn't understand their needs or how to communicate with them. Next week, in part 2, we talk more about our own family, and how we've realized through the years that autism has been right here in our own world for generations. You don't want to miss it...because it's your story, too.

Communication is the bridge that connects us and this week we continue my summer communication series. Today in part two of my conversation with two of the very most important people in my life, my daughter, Abby, who is autistic, and my son, Aidan, who is neurotypical, we talk about what it's been like for them as siblings in a neurodiverse relationship, but also with me as their neurotypical mom navigating parenting in a neurodiverse family. I invite you to hear what they have to say, because I think you're going to really relate to so much of it!

In Part 2 of my talk with Bo, who identifies as an "Aspie," or as having Asperger's, we chat about how words and expressions can mean really different things, especially in neurodiverse relationships. Bo also shares with me how social interactions have often created confusion for him and the people in his life because of the different understandings and expectations in social exchanges. If you missed Part 1, "Childhood Memories Make Sense Now," be sure to tune in to hear Bo discuss his memories from childhood and how he now recognizes the many sensory challenges he experienced as a child.

How To Know If Someone With Autism Loves You

Ep. 9 - How To Know If Someone With Autism Loves You
"How do I know if my autistic partner (child, sibling, friend) loves me?" This is a question that I am asked constantly. In my most popular video, to date, I share some tips for how to recognize that a neurodivergent individual is expressing love. The way love is communicated between neurotypical and neurodivergent individuals is truly not always similar - we "speak love" in vastly different ways.
These communication and perception differences often result in tremendous confusion and hurt. In this updated/edited version, of my original video, you still get the insights and tips that have already helped thousands of people, but I also share with you the backstory on why I originally recorded this video (it isn't what most people think!).

Here in Part 2, they talk about the insights they gained, and the communication tools and skills they use from their private intensive coaching with Jodi that have completely changed their lives. Ep. 7: Rob, 51, autistic -”I would go to meetups where I knew no one & I would be social with people I never met before - that’s like the Super Bowl of social practice”
In today's episode Rob shares with Jodi how his ex-wife's family didn't like him and he didn't understand why until two of his son's were diagnosed as autistic. He shares his perspective on smiling and learning to use tone of voice as well as his personal strategies for being intentional with practicing social skills, all of which has resulted in new friendships.
In this episode, Jodi mentions research about how autistic individuals don't use facial expressions and eye contact for information in the same way as non-autistic individuals. One study notes:
"Direct eye contact elicits a heightened physiological response as indicated by heightened skin conductance and increased amygdala activity. For individuals with autism, avoiding the eyes is an adaptive strategy, however, this approach interferes with the ability to process facial cues of identity, expressions and intentions, The “eye avoidance” strategy has negative effects on the ability to decode facial information about identity, expression, and intentions, exacerbating the social challenges for persons with ASD."
